Founded in the 3rd century BCE, Hatra became capital of the first Arab kingdom and major religious center. The city successfully repelled Roman sieges in 116 and 198 CE due to its innovative defense systems. It flourished as a caravan city on trade routes until its destruction in 241 CE.
Visit with an experienced guide to fully appreciate the historical significance. Site can be very hot in summer - visit October through April. Bring plenty of water and sun protection. Allow 3-4 hours for thorough exploration. Entrance fee includes access to all ruins.
