Visiting the shrines of Imam Hussain and his brother Abbas (peace be upon them) in the city of Karbala is a unique spiritual and cultural experience. Millions visit these shrines annually, which requires accurate knowledge of the etiquette followed and the best times to visit.
The sanctity of Karbala is linked to the historic Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. Since then, the city has become a global center for Shias and a symbol of sacrifice, where the current architecture reflects a mix of Safavid, Qajar, and modern Islamic arts.
The best time for a quiet visit is in the early dawn hours or in the middle of the week. Avoid days of massive gatherings like Arbaeen and Ashura unless you want to experience the huge human momentum. Modest clothing is essential, and women must wear the traditional abaya (Chador).
Modest clothing (long pants and non-tight shirts for men, and an abaya for women). Socks, as shoes are removed at the entrances to the sanctuary. A small bag for personal items.
The shrines are equipped with special entrances for people with special needs and the elderly, and free wheelchairs are available. The area between the two shrines is for pedestrians only, and small electric cars are available to transport visitors.
