The Chibayish Marshes in southern Iraq are one of the most beautiful natural reserves in the world. A traditional boat tour (Mashoof) offers a unique experience to enjoy wildlife, observe migratory birds, and learn about the culture of the Marsh Arabs (Ma'dan).
The Iraqi marshes are known as the potential "Garden of Eden" and are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This region represents a unique cultural continuity dating back to Sumerian times, where residents still use the same ancient reed construction and fishing techniques.
It is recommended to start very early (around 5 AM) to enjoy the sunrise, or book an evening tour for the sunset. The main starting point is the city of Chibayish, which can be reached from Nasiriyah. It is essential to agree with a local boat driver in advance.
Sunglasses and a hat for protection from strong water reflections. A light jacket as it can be cold in the early morning or after sunset. Binoculars for close-up observation of migratory birds.
The tour requires riding small boats, which may be difficult for those with severe mobility issues. Tourist facilities and restaurants serving the famous Masgouf fish are available at the Chibayish monument and the marsh entrance.
