Wadi-us-Salam Cemetery in the city of Najaf is the largest cemetery in the world, and it is a site of immense spiritual and historical importance. The cemetery spans a vast area and contains millions of graves, including the graves of prophets, righteous people, kings, and scholars.
Wadi-us-Salam Cemetery is linked to the shrine of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib in Najaf, where many recommend being buried nearby out of devotion. The history of the cemetery dates back thousands of years, and it is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
Due to its vast area and the complexity of its passages, it is highly recommended to hire a local guide or an expert "Tuk-tuk" driver. Complete silence must be maintained, and walking over graves is prohibited out of respect for the dead. The best time to visit is early morning or before sunset.
Sufficient water and a hat, as the cemetery is completely exposed to the sun. Very modest clothing suitable for the sanctity of the place. Wet wipes, as the paths can be dusty.
The cemetery consists of narrow streets and rugged passages, making it difficult to access for some types of large cars. Small cars (Tuk-tuks) are available for internal transportation.
