The Zagros Mountains in the Kurdistan region of Iraq offer ideal hiking trails for beginners who want to enjoy nature without the need for strenuous physical effort. The trails pass through green valleys and small waterfalls.
The Zagros Mountains are considered the cradle of many ancient civilizations and a shelter for unique biodiversity. These mountains are linked to the Kurdish identity as a symbol of resilience and beauty, and they are part of a mountain range that stretches across several countries.
The best time for hiking is in spring (April and May) to see the greenery, or in autumn (September and October) to enjoy moderate weather. It is always recommended to go with a group or a local guide to know the best safe trails.
Strong sneakers or special hiking shoes. A light backpack containing water and some snacks. A walking stick to help with balance in simple downhill areas.
Most beginner trails start from areas near Erbil, Duhok, or Rawanduz. The roads leading to the starting points are paved and good, and can be accessed by regular cars.
