No. You cannot enter federal Iraq directly through Erbil International Airport. Erbil Airport is located in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and operates under Kurdistan Regional Government border control, not federal Iraqi immigration control. When you land at Erbil Airport, you enter the Kurdistan Region only.
Travel from Erbil to federal Iraq
- Regional visas remain regional. Visas issued online or on arrival by the Kurdistan Regional Government allow travel within the Kurdistan Region only. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office notes that these permits are valid solely for the northern region. A regional visa does not permit entry into federal territory.
- Federal visa requirement. To travel from Erbil to federal cities such as Baghdad, Basra, or Najaf, you must hold an approved federal Iraq visa. You can obtain a federal visa through the Iraqi Electronic Visa Portal or an Iraqi diplomatic post such as the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Washington, D.C..
- Internal border checkpoints. You enter federal Iraq only after leaving Erbil and passing internal security checkpoints by road or taking a domestic flight. Security forces inspect passports and federal visas at these checkpoints. Officers turn back travellers who lack a federal visa.
