You can enter Iraq with a temporary passport only if it is valid for at least six months from your arrival date. Emergency travel documents issued for single urgent trips or with shorter validity do not meet Iraqi entry requirements. Airlines deny boarding to passengers who hold emergency documents without verified entry permission.
-
Passport validity and document type. Iraqi border rules require all travel documents to remain valid for at least six months after arrival, as confirmed by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. Standard temporary passports issued with a validity of six months or longer can meet this requirement. Emergency travel documents, European emergency certificates, and one-way transit papers with short expiration windows do not qualify.
-
Visa requirements and application channels. A temporary passport does not waive visa requirements. The self-service Iraqi Electronic Visa Portal requires an ordinary valid passport. Travellers holding emergency papers or non-standard passports cannot use the electronic portal. You must apply through the consular section of the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq before you travel. Consular visa processing takes at least 15 business days.
-
Destination jurisdiction and entry points. Entry rules apply across all federal ports, including Baghdad, Najaf, and Basra airports. The Kurdistan Region operates separate entry procedures. Visas issued for the Kurdistan Region permit travel only inside that region. Moving into Federal Iraq requires federal clearance and a compliant travel document.
-
Iraqi citizens returning on emergency documents. Iraqi citizens abroad who lose their passports cannot enter as tourists on foreign emergency papers. The Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in London issues an emergency transit laissez-passer, known as jawaz murur, valid for six months, which permits a single entry solely for travel to Iraq.
