First check your government's current travel advice. The UK advises against all but essential travel to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Canada advises against all travel to Iraq. A guide cannot remove those risks.
If you are considering a trip, compare guides for your exact route and activity:
- Ask about their experience on that route, qualifications and first-aid training. Request evidence of any claimed credentials and the operator's registration. We could not verify a regional mountain-guide licensing scheme.
- Ask the operator and relevant local authorities whether the route is accessible and whether permissions are needed. Confirm current security and explosive hazards independently. Do not assume a guide can guarantee a safe route. If these checks are inconclusive, choose another activity.
- Discuss the forecast, route difficulty, group size, turnaround conditions and emergency plan. Ask what first-aid, communication and safety equipment the guide carries and what you need to bring. Check that your insurance covers the location and activity.
Landmines and unexploded weapons occur in rural areas, especially near borders; not all areas have warning signs. Avoid unmarked trails.
