Having Iraqi heritage does not automatically allow you to enter Iraq without a visa. Your entry rules depend on the physical travel document you hold. Airlines and border officers check passport citizenship, not family heritage or birthplace.
-
Valid Iraqi passport. If you hold a valid Iraqi passport, you enter Iraq as an Iraqi citizen without a visa. If your passport is expired or lost, apply for a six-month Iraqi laissez-passer transit document at an Embassy of the Republic of Iraq before travelling.
-
Foreign passport with Iraqi heritage. If you travel only on a foreign passport, foreign visitor rules apply. Consular guidelines from the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq state that foreign passport holders born in Iraq do not require an entry visa. However, commercial airlines frequently require an entry visa before departure to avoid denying boarding. Foreign passport holders of Iraqi descent can apply for an entry visa through an Iraqi consulate with the visa fee waived by submitting proof of Iraqi origin, such as a parent's Iraqi nationality certificate or civil status identity card.
-
Unconfirmed citizenship cases. Iraqi ancestry alone does not prove legal citizenship at a border. If your citizenship status or eligibility is uncertain, an Iraqi embassy, consulate, or the Directorate of Civil Status, Passports and Residency must confirm your case before you book flights.

Protect identity documents. Never send original national identity cards or certificates through unverified postal services or hand them to unauthorized third parties. Use official consular channels and keep secure digital copies.
