A previous visit to Iraq does not stop you from applying for a new visa, and it does not guarantee approval. Iraqi immigration authorities assess each trip as a separate entry request. A past trip has no negative impact on a new application if you left on time and obeyed immigration laws. Overstaying a previous visa or violating visa conditions can cause fines, entry bans, or visa refusals.
Review these key factors before submitting a new application:
- Single-entry limits. Standard tourist visas and electronic visas are single-entry documents. A visa expires when you exit Iraq. You must obtain a fresh visa for every subsequent trip unless you hold an approved multi-entry consular visa.
- Passport citizenship. Eligibility depends on the country that issued your current passport. Holding an earlier Iraqi visa does not change your nationality status or grant automatic entry. You cannot infer visa exemptions from foreign residence cards, birthplaces, or third-country rules.
- Destination jurisdiction. Visas issued for Federal Iraq and the Kurdistan Region are separate. Visas issued for the Kurdistan Region are valid only within that region. Travelling to Federal Iraq requires an entry visa through the official Iraqi Electronic Visa Portal or an embassy.
- Entry point and travel purpose. Tourist visas cover short recreational visits. Work, official missions, or commercial activities require specific approvals and work permits before travel. Check that your arrival airport or border crossing handles your visa category.
- Passport validity. Your passport must be physical, intact, and valid for at least six months from the date of application. If your nationality requires an embassy visa, apply through the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq.
