Carry enough Iraqi dinars to cover your unpaid day-trip costs, including the return journey, plus a separate emergency reserve. A single amount would be misleading without your route, group size and booking details. Iraq's economy is primarily cash-based, and finding an ATM that accepts your foreign bank card can be difficult. Do not rely on withdrawing more during the trip.
To work out your cash budget:
- Ask your driver or operator for a dated price covering the full return trip. Confirm whether it is per person or per vehicle, what is included, and how and when to pay.
- Add any unpaid entry tickets, meals, drinking water and planned purchases. Check these costs with your provider or the venue before departure. Subtract amounts already paid.
- Keep an extra reserve for changes to your return transport, separate from your spending money. This is a planning suggestion, not an official minimum.
If transport and meals are prepaid, budget only for the remaining costs and reserve. Which route are you taking, how many people are travelling, and what have you already paid for?
