You can exchange foreign cash at local commercial banks and exchange bureaus in Iraq. Australia's Smartraveller advice identifies US dollars and euros as the easiest foreign currencies to exchange. The local currency is the Iraqi dinar, IQD.
Before visiting an office, ask your accommodation to help identify an established provider nearby. Confirm directly that it accepts your currency and serves visiting non-customers. Ask about opening hours and any identification requirements rather than assuming every branch offers the same service.
Before handing over cash, ask for the exchange rate, any fee and the total dinars you will receive. Compare the final amount at more than one office if practical. Count the notes at the counter and ask for a receipt. These are precautions, not a guarantee against fraud. No current retail rate or fee is quoted here.
