You can travel from Baghdad to Nasiriyah by overnight passenger train, private vehicle, or shared intercity road transport.
The daily overnight train to Basra stops at Nasiriyah. It leaves Baghdad Central Station in Karkh at 19:00. You cannot book train tickets online. You must buy them in person at the station counter on the day you travel. The ticket office opens at 09:00, and sleeper berths often sell out fast. Station ticket fares cost 10,000 IQD for second class, 15,000 IQD for first class, 31,000 IQD for a four-berth sleeper, and 37,000 IQD for a two-berth sleeper. Solo travelers can buy both beds in a two-berth compartment for sole use. Bring cash in Iraqi Dinars, as card payment terminals can fail.
By road, driving takes about 4 to 5 hours over roughly 350 kilometers. Shared taxis and minibuses run from intercity transport hubs in Baghdad, such as Al-Nahda or Al-Alawi garage, and leave once full. If you want a private driver or tour, request a direct quote from a registered Iraqi operator or local driver before travel. Confirm in advance what the quote includes, especially fuel, highway tolls, waiting time, and return travel.
Always carry your physical passport and valid Iraqi visa or entry stamp. Station staff check your documents before issuing train tickets, and security officers verify identification at road checkpoints along the highway.
