Travellers holding an ordinary French passport must obtain an electronic visa before travelling to federal Iraq. Visas on arrival are no longer available for French tourists at Baghdad airport.
Follow these rules based on your destination and travel route:
- Passport validity. Your ordinary French passport must remain valid for at least six months from your arrival date and contain at least one blank page.
- Federal Iraq travel. For travel to federal destinations such as Baghdad, Basra, or Najaf, you must submit your application online before departure. The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs confirms that tourist visas on arrival stopped on 1 March 2025. Submit your application through the official Iraqi Electronic Visa portal. Prepare your valid passport and a digital photograph with a white background. Pay the required fee online through the portal. The electronic visa is valid for 30 days for single or multiple entry. Print the approved visa to present at border control. Keep a confirmed return or onward flight ticket, as airlines can deny boarding without one. Overstaying your visa requires an exit visa from the Iraqi Residency Directorate, incurring a penalty of 500,000 IQD plus 10,000 IQD per day.
- Kurdistan Region travel. If your visit takes place only within the Kurdistan Region, you can obtain a 30-day regional visa upon arrival at regional airports such as Erbil and Sulaymaniyah, or at the Ibrahim Khalil land crossing from Turkey, after initiating the request on the Kurdistan Regional Government portal. The regional visa costs 103,000 IQD prepaid online. Visas issued by the Kurdistan Regional Government allow travel only inside the Kurdistan Region. They do not permit travel into federal Iraq. If you already hold a valid federal Iraqi visa, you can enter the Kurdistan Region without obtaining a separate regional visa.
- Consular assistance. French citizens who have Iraqi heritage or need consular help can contact the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Paris. Entry rules are also monitored by the .
