Travellers holding an ordinary German passport must obtain an electronic visa before travelling to federal Iraq. The Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Berlin requires German passport holders to secure prior visa approval online.
Follow these rules based on your destination and travel route:
- Passport validity. Your ordinary German passport must remain valid for at least six months from your date of arrival and contain at least one blank page.
- Federal Iraq travel. For travel to federal destinations such as Baghdad, Basra, or Najaf, you must submit your application online before departure. The Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Berlin confirms that German citizens must obtain electronic approval before departure. Submit your application through the official Iraqi Electronic Visa portal. Prepare your passport and a digital photograph with a white background. Pay the required fee online through the secure portal. The electronic visa is valid for 30 days for single or multiple entry. Print the approved visa and present it at border control. Keep a confirmed return or onward flight ticket, as airlines can deny boarding without one.
- Kurdistan Region travel. If your visit takes place only within the Kurdistan Region, you can apply through the regional electronic visa system or obtain a visa on arrival at regional entry points like Erbil or Sulaymaniyah. Visas issued by the Kurdistan Regional Government allow travel only inside the Kurdistan Region. They do not permit travel into federal Iraq.
- Consular assistance. German citizens who have Iraqi heritage or who need consular help should contact the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Berlin. Travel and entry conditions are also monitored by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
