Travellers holding an ordinary Dutch passport must obtain an electronic visa before travelling to federal Iraq. Tourist visas on arrival are no longer available at federal entry points. The Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in The Hague confirms that Dutch citizens must secure prior online approval before departure.
Follow these rules based on your destination and travel route:
- Passport validity. Your ordinary Dutch passport must remain valid for at least six months from your arrival date.
- Federal Iraq travel. For destinations such as Baghdad, Basra, or Najaf, submit your application before departure through the official Iraqi Electronic Visa portal. The Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that Dutch passport holders require an electronic visa. Prepare your passport, a digital photograph with a white background, and pay the fee online. The electronic visa is valid for 30 days for single or multiple entry. Print the approved visa to present at border control. Airlines require a confirmed return or onward flight ticket, and travel advice from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office warns that airlines can deny boarding without one. Evidence of prior travel to Israel can lead to entry refusal.
- Kurdistan Region travel. If your trip is limited to the Kurdistan Region, you can obtain a regional visa on arrival at Erbil airport or apply through the Kurdistan Regional Government portal. Visas issued by regional authorities allow travel only within the Kurdistan Region. They do not allow travel into federal Iraq.
- Consular assistance. Dutch citizens with Iraqi heritage or travellers who need consular support can contact the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in The Hague. If you encounter an error on the application form, you can contact the Residency Affairs hotline at +964 772 111 1434.
