Travellers holding an ordinary British citizen passport must obtain a visa before arriving in federal Iraq. Visas on arrival are no longer available for federal Iraq.
Follow these rules based on your destination and travel document:
- Passport validity. Your ordinary British passport must have at least six months of validity remaining after your arrival date and at least one blank page.
- Federal Iraq travel. If you travel to federal Iraq, such as Baghdad, Basra, or Najaf, you must apply online through the official Iraqi electronic visa portal at least 24 hours before departure. The Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in London directs foreign passport holders to apply online. The visa costs 160 USD and is valid for 60 days. You must hold a confirmed return or onward ticket, or airlines can deny boarding.
- Kurdistan Region travel. If your visit is restricted to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, you can apply through the regional government eVisa portal or obtain a visa on arrival at regional entry points like Erbil or Sulaymaniyah. Visas issued by the Kurdistan Regional Government are valid only for travel within the Kurdistan Region.
- Consular assistance. British citizens who have Iraqi heritage or who are unsure how entry rules apply to their situation should contact the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in London. Official travel and entry guidance is published by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
