Yes. Take mosquito-bite precautions when visiting the Iraqi marshes, including on a day trip. CDC recommends preventing insect bites in Iraq. This advice does not establish a marsh-specific outbreak or disease rate.
- Use an insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin, also called icaridin. Follow the label, including reapplication instructions. Apply sunscreen before repellent.
- Wear long sleeves and long trousers. Do not rely on evening-only protection. Mosquitoes can bite during the day and night.
- For overnight stays, choose air-conditioned accommodation or rooms with window and door screens. Use a mosquito net if sleeping outside or without screened rooms.
- Permethrin-treated clothing and gear are another option. Never apply permethrin directly to skin.
For children, follow the product's age restrictions. Do not use oil of lemon eucalyptus or PMD repellents on children under three. If you feel ill after the trip, especially with a fever, seek medical advice and mention where you travelled.
