Power cuts from the public electrical grid occur daily across Iraq. Peak electricity demand regularly exceeds public grid supply, particularly during the hot summer months when cooling needs rise. To manage these outages, businesses, residential neighbourhoods, and hotels rely on private diesel generators to supply electricity when the national grid cuts out.
Backup power varies significantly between properties. Major international and high-end hotels usually operate automatic industrial generators that power the entire building without noticeable interruption. Smaller hotels, budget guesthouses, and private apartments often use shared neighbourhood generators with limited capacity.
Before booking or checking in, ask your hotel these questions:
- Generator coverage. Ask whether the hotel has on-site backup generators and whether they run around the clock during grid outages.
- Air conditioning. Check whether generator power runs room air conditioning and hot water, or only basic lighting and small wall sockets.
- Switchover delays. Ask if there is a gap between the public grid shutting off and the generator starting.
- Elevators. Confirm whether passenger lifts operate during power cuts.
For personal electronics, carry a charged portable power bank. Charge devices whenever power is active, and consider using a surge protector for sensitive equipment during voltage fluctuations.
