If you apply for an electronic visa, you do not send your passport to an Iraqi embassy. The Iraqi Electronic Visa Portal operates entirely online. You upload a digital scan of your passport information page and print the approval document sent to your email.
If you apply for a consular visa through an embassy, you must provide your physical passport so staff can affix the visa sticker. Missions handle passport submission in stages:
Submission stages
- Initial filing. Foreign nationals first submit a completed application form, passport photos, and a color copy of their passport information page. Missions coordinate with authorities in Baghdad before requesting the physical passport.
- Passport delivery. Once authorities grant approval, the embassy instructs you to submit your original passport, the visa fee, and a prepaid return envelope. Applicants who file in person or under family categories often present the original passport at the start.
Required vs supporting documents
- Required items. You must provide your actual, undamaged passport with at least six months of remaining validity, two passport photographs measuring 2 by 2 inches, and the official form. If you mail documents, use a tracked courier such as USPS Priority Express or UPS with a prepaid return envelope. Embassies take no responsibility for transit loss.
- Supporting records. An invitation letter or sponsor document establishes your travel purpose. Hotel reservations and flight itineraries are supporting records. Do not send original personal identification cards or cash fees until instructed by the mission.
