Sometimes you can visit an archaeological site where research has taken place, but do not assume you can enter a working excavation. For example, the independent guide VisitKurdistan describes visits to Shanidar Cave in the Kurdistan Region and notes more recent excavations there. It advises checking current access locally. This does not confirm access during an active dig.
Before travelling, ask the site authority or excavation team whether visitors are allowed on your dates, which areas you may enter, and whether permission or a guide is needed. If using a tour operator, ask how it will confirm access and check its guide's credentials. We could not verify a general visitor permit procedure or current access to working trenches. Do not enter an excavation without the responsible team's agreement.
If a visit is arranged, follow the team's instructions, stay clear of trenches and leave finds and soil undisturbed. Ask before photographing workers or their work. Sturdy shoes and water are sensible for an uneven site; ask the team about any site-specific equipment.
