Stay calm and follow officials’ instructions. Ask which office is holding your passport, why it is being kept, and how and when you can ask for its return. If possible, request written confirmation or a receipt. Note the office, location, time, and any instructions. Do not try to take the passport back by force.
If officials restrict your movement or question you about an alleged offence, ask to contact your country’s embassy or consulate and seek local legal advice. Contact your embassy or consulate if the passport is not returned or you need help understanding the next step. Keep a digital copy of your passport and travel documents. The Government of Canada’s Iraq travel advice recommends carrying a digital copy in case documents are seized or lost.
