Contact your card issuer and use your cash backup for essential expenses while you resolve the problem. Do not assume that another ATM will work. Canada's travel advice says Iraq is primarily cash-based and finding an ATM that accepts an international bank card can be difficult.
- Contact your bank through its official website, banking app or the number on your card. Explain whether a shop payment or ATM withdrawal failed. Ask it to check your balance, withdrawal limit, any security block and whether your card supports transactions in Iraq.
- If you have another card, check with its issuer before relying on it. Local acceptance is not guaranteed.
- If you have no usable cash, ask your issuer about emergency options available at your location. Visa describes emergency cash and replacement cards as subject to bank approval and restrictions. Ask specifically about availability in Iraq, fees and delivery arrangements. Do not assume a replacement or cash will arrive within a set time.
- If the card is missing or you notice suspicious charges, report this to your issuer immediately.
