Visit Lalish as an active Yazidi place of pilgrimage, not a museum. Its sacred-site customs differ from everyday city etiquette and should not be treated as rules for all of Iraq.
- Expect to remove your shoes and walk barefoot in the sacred area. Ask your guide or a guardian where to leave them. If barefoot walking is difficult for you, discuss this before travelling rather than assuming an exception.
- Step over doorway thresholds, not on them.
- Wear modest clothing. Ask your guide about the site's current dress expectations before your visit.
- Ask permission before photographing worshippers or interiors. Do not assume permission to photograph a ceremony.
- Observe rituals quietly. Do not join unless invited, and follow the guardians' guidance about which areas you may enter.
These are religious-site customs and visitor guidance, not a statement of Iraqi law. Do not infer anyone's religion from their clothing or where they live.
