You cannot extend your stay online through the electronic visa portal. To extend an authorized stay in Federal Iraq, you must apply in person at the Directorate of Residency Affairs in Baghdad, located at Al-Karrada near Al-Andalus Square, or at a provincial residency office. In the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, you must apply in person at the local Kurdistan Regional Government Directorate of Residency in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, or Duhok. You must submit your request before your permitted stay expires.
Managing corrections across application stages
- Edits before submission. Check personal details and passport numbers before paying the fee. The online form allows changes during data entry, but payment locks the file against further edits.
- Changes during processing. You cannot alter application fields while immigration officers review your file. If officers identify missing or defective documents, the portal requests additional information so you can upload them.
- Errors after visa issue. Authorities do not alter an electronic visa after issuance. If an approved visa contains incorrect personal data, you cannot use it to travel. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office notes that airlines deny boarding and border officers refuse entry when travel documents are invalid. You must submit a fresh application.
Reapplication, extension, and overstay procedures
- Reapplication. If authorities refuse your visa or if your issued document contains errors, submit a new application and pay the government fee again. Visa fees are non-refundable. The Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Washington, D.C. confirms that passports must remain valid for at least six months from submission.
- Extension in person. You must apply for an extension before your permitted stay expires. Visit the Directorate of Residency Affairs in Federal Iraq or the regional residency office in Kurdistan. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms that an expired visa cannot be extended after it lapses. The Iraqi Electronic Visa Portal notes that tourist visas allow a thirty-day stay upon entry.
- Overstay penalties. Remaining in Iraq past your authorized stay violates residency regulations. Overstayers face daily administrative fines. You cannot leave the country through airports or border posts until you settle all fines at the Directorate of Residency Affairs and obtain exit clearance.
Referral to the competent authority
Commercial travel agencies and chatbots cannot view official immigration records, extend visas, or cancel fines. If you face unresolved legal problems or disputed entry bans, present your case directly to the competent authority. Contact the Directorate of Residency Affairs under the Ministry of Interior in Federal Iraq, the Directorate of Residency in Kurdistan, or an Iraqi embassy abroad.
As a practical suggestion, keep printed copies of your passport and visa approval before visiting the residency office.
