You must apply for a visa through an Iraqi embassy or consulate if you cannot use the self-service electronic visa system or if your trip falls outside standard tourism.
The following travellers must apply through an embassy:
- Unlisted citizenships. If your passport country does not appear on the official Iraqi Electronic Visa Portal, you cannot use the self-service portal. You must submit your application to an Iraqi embassy.
- Non-ordinary travel documents. Holders of diplomatic, service, or official passports on official business must apply through consular or diplomatic channels. Travellers using refugee travel documents, emergency passports, or stateless certificates must also apply through an embassy.
- Non-tourist travel purposes. Travellers visiting Iraq for employment, academic study, long-term residence, journalism, or official delegation visits need specific consular visas arranged with official approvals.
- Destination jurisdiction and entry points. Consular visas issued by Iraqi embassies cover entry into Federal Iraq through federal border ports and airports. The Kurdistan Region operates a separate entry system with distinct rules for its entry points.
Passport citizenship determines your entry rules. Holding a foreign residence permit, a third-country visa, or a foreign birthplace does not grant electronic visa access. Iraq enforces sovereign entry requirements and does not adopt exemptions from other countries.
To apply, contact the consular section of the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq responsible for your residence. Prepare a passport valid for at least six months, passport photos, and official proof of your travel purpose.
