Citizens of 11 countries usually can't use Iraq's self-service eVisa portal. This is not a bantourist visas are still available through an Iraqi embassy/consulate or via an Iraqi sponsor.
Countries affected
Egypt, Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Philippines, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Sudan.
What makes these passports different?
Most travelers can apply through the standard self-service channels. For the nationalities above, those options are usually not available:
- Iraq eVisa portal (evisa.iq): the nationality may not appear as eligible
- Online embassy booking (icass.mofa.gov.iq): generally reserved for diplomats and Iraqi nationals
This is not a ban. Visas are issued regularly, but these applications require pre-approval and extra verification before a visa can be issued.
Pathway 1: Apply directly through an Iraqi Embassy/Consulate
This is the most common route.
How it works
- Find your nearest Iraqi embassy/consulate (or the one responsible for your region).
- Contact them directly by phone/email (or visit during business hours).
- Ask for the tourist visa process for your nationality.
- Submit documents and pay the fee as instructed.
- Wait for processing, then collect your passport/visa.
Typical processing time: often 2-4 weeks (varies by embassy and case) Typical fee range: commonly $30-$80 USD (varies by location)
Commonly requested documents (varies)
- Passport valid for 6+ months
- Passport photos
- Visa application form
- Accommodation details (hotel booking or host info)
- Travel plan / itinerary (some embassies ask for flights)
- Proof of funds
- Any additional documents requested by the embassy
Pathway 2: Apply via an Iraqi sponsor/guarantor
If you have a legitimate sponsor in Iraq, they may submit the application on your behalf.
Who can sponsor?
- Iraqi citizen (valid civil ID)
- Registered Iraqi company/organization
- Licensed Iraqi tour operator
- Hotel or travel partner in Iraq
How it works
- You send the sponsor your passport copy and trip details.
- The sponsor submits the application with a guarantee letter to the relevant authorities.
- After approval, you receive an authorization/reference.
- Travel only after approval and present the authorization as instructed.
Typical processing time: often 1-3 weeks (varies by case)
Key tips
- Start early: plan 4-6 weeks before travel.
- Don't book non-refundable flights before approval.
- Use only official embassy contacts and verified sponsors.
- Keep printed copies and digital scans of all documents.
