Check the property and payment terms before sending money. A listing alone is not proof that accommodation exists or that a payment request is genuine. These are general fraud precautions, not an Iraqi hotel certification scheme.
- Compare the name and address with the property's own website. Contact it through independently found official details, not a number supplied only in a suspicious message. Ask it to confirm your booking and any requested payment.
- Read guest reviews and compare prices with nearby accommodation. A very low price is a warning sign, not proof of fraud.
- Read the total price, deposit, cancellation and payment terms before booking. Ask the property directly about identity documents and any room-sharing conditions for your party. Do not apply one property's rules to all Iraqi accommodation.
- For Booking.com reservations, use its messaging system. Do not send card details by email, phone, text or WhatsApp. An urgent request to pay again or a transfer that differs from your confirmation needs checking with Booking.com support through its website or app.
- If you shared card details with a suspected scammer, contact your bank or payment provider immediately and report the message to the booking platform. Save the listing, messages and receipts as evidence.
For family accommodation, confirm occupancy and beds. For a hostel, ask whether the booking is a dormitory bed or private room. For a guesthouse, confirm bathroom arrangements and reception hours. Do not assume hotel services apply.
