Ask the caretaker whether sightseeing is welcome at that time. Plan around worship, rather than treating a church as an unattended monument. Do not assume anyone's religion from their name, language or appearance.
- Wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees as a respectful starting point. Ask about the particular site's expectations for head coverings and shoes instead of applying mosque or shrine customs automatically. These are visitor-etiquette recommendations, not a verified nationwide church dress law.
- Keep your phone silent and avoid interrupting prayer. Ask before photographing interiors, clergy or worshippers. Being allowed into a courtyard does not establish permission to photograph everything inside.
- Match your plans to the setting. For a city church, check service times and visitor access. UNESCO records that Mosul's Al-Tahera Church was restored and handed back to its Christian community in September 2024. Restoration is not proof of unrestricted tourist access. For a mountain monastery such as Rabban Hormizd above Alqosh, ask about steps and accessible areas, and arrange your return transport beforehand.
- Check the exact location and route, not just the label 'northern Iraq'. The UK FCDO currently advises against all travel to Ninawa province and against all but essential travel to the Kurdistan Region. A welcoming religious site does not remove regional travel risks.
