Winter, from November to February, is the main season for waterbirds in the Iraqi marshes. Large numbers of ducks, geese, and wading birds winter in the wetlands during these months. Spring passage migration, from March to early May, brings high species diversity as northbound migrants stop to feed. Sightings depend on local conditions and are never guaranteed.
Water levels vary significantly between years and seasons. Before booking, confirm current water levels and navigable channels for the marsh you plan to visit, such as the Central Marshes near Chibayish. Work with experienced local boatmen and ask whether guides carry recognized credentials or recent sighting lists. Confirm boat safety equipment, life jackets, and any security permissions needed for local checkpoints. Stay on established waterways with your guide, and never disturb nesting birds or handle wildlife.
Bring 8x42 or 10x42 binoculars, sun protection, drinking water, and warm layers for dawn departures.
Check government travel advisories before your trip. The UK FCDO Iraq travel advice advises against all but essential travel to Dhi Qar and parts of neighbouring southern provinces, and against all travel near border zones.
