An Iraqi dual citizen can enter Iraq on a foreign passport, but foreign visitor rules apply unless you show valid Iraqi travel documents. Border authorities evaluate your entry permissions solely from the passport you present.
-
Foreign passport requirements. If you present only a foreign passport, you must meet that nationality's entry conditions. Guidelines from the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq state that foreign passport holders born in Iraq do not need an entry visa. However, commercial airlines frequently require an entry visa before departure to avoid denying boarding. Dual citizens of Iraqi origin can obtain an advance consular visa with fees waived by providing proof of Iraqi parentage, such as a parent's civil status card or nationality certificate. The foreign passport must remain valid for at least six months.
-
Iraqi citizenship documents. Under Article 10 of Iraqi Nationality Law No. 26 of 2006, documented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iraq, Iraq recognizes dual nationality. Iraqi citizens can enter without a visa using a valid Iraqi passport. If your Iraqi passport is expired or lost, obtain a six-month single-use transit document from the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in London before departure.
-
Authority for uncertain status. Do not assume legal Iraqi citizenship from ancestry or birthplace alone. If your status is unconfirmed, an Iraqi embassy consular section or the Directorate of Civil Status, Passports and Residency must verify your records before you travel.
-
Document safety and return rules. Never send original identity cards or certificates through unverified delivery services or give them to third parties. When returning home, dual nationals must present their foreign passport to meet home country entry rules, as outlined by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
