Travel from central Baghdad to the Ziggurat of Aqar Quf by private driver, round-trip taxi, or public transport. The site lies approximately 30 kilometers west of central Baghdad in the Abu Ghraib district. Driving takes 45 to 60 minutes each way, depending on traffic and checkpoints.
Available options and fares:
- Private driver or guided tour. Hiring a private car and driver for a half-day trip is the most reliable option. Request a quote directly from a local operator such as Roam Iraq. Confirm that your driver will wait at the site, because finding a return vehicle at the ruins is not guaranteed.
- City taxi. You can arrange a round-trip fare with a street taxi from central Baghdad neighborhoods such as Karrada or Al-Mansour. Agree on the total fare and waiting time before departure. A round trip with waiting time typically costs between 40,000 and 60,000 IQD.
- Public transport. Shared taxis and minibuses run west from central transit hubs such as Al-Nasr Square toward Abu Ghraib for around 1,000 IQD. Drivers drop passengers at the rural turnoff, leaving a 3-kilometer walk to the ziggurat. Return transport from the turnoff back to the city is unpredictable.
What to check before booking:
- Waiting time. Confirm that your driver will wait during your visit. The archaeological site has no taxi rank.
- Travel documents. Carry your physical passport and valid Iraqi visa. Iraqi law requires you to carry photographic identification. You will pass military and police checkpoints on the road west out of Baghdad.
- Cash. Pay drivers and site ticket staff in cash with Iraqi Dinars.
- Security. Do not point cameras or phones at military personnel or checkpoints.
