You can travel from Mosul to Mar Mattai Monastery by private driver, round-trip city taxi, or local transport combined with a private taxi. The monastery sits on Mount Alfaf (Mount Maqlub), about 30 kilometers northeast of central Mosul. Driving takes 40 to 60 minutes each way, depending on checkpoint lines and the winding mountain ascent.
Operating options and fares:
- Private driver or guided tour. Arranging a private car and driver through your Mosul hotel or requesting a quote from an operator such as Roam Iraq is the most dependable option. A private driver picks you up directly, handles checkpoint stops, and waits while you tour the monastery.
- Round-trip city taxi. Street taxis in eastern Mosul or near central transport hubs can take you to the monastery. You must negotiate a round trip that includes 1 to 2 hours of waiting time, because no taxis wait at the monastery for return passengers. A round trip typically costs between 40,000 and 60,000 IQD.
- Shared minibus to Bartella, then local taxi. Shared minibuses run east from Mosul garages toward Bartella for about 1,000 to 2,000 IQD. From Bartella, you must hire a local taxi up Mount Alfaf for 10,000 to 15,000 IQD. Public transit does not drive up the mountain, and finding a return taxi from the mountain back to Mosul is not reliable.
