The structure crowning the summit of the Great Ziggurat at Nippur is an expedition house built from fired brick in the late nineteenth century by American excavators from the University of Pennsylvania. Over earlier millennia, the original mudbrick ziggurat built by King Ur-Nammu had also been converted into a fortified acropolis during the Parthian period, giving the mound its distinctive fortress profile.
