In Marsh Arab and Bedouin tradition, guests may be served up to three cups of unsweetened cardamom coffee (gahwa): the first is the cup of hospitality (finjan al-dayf) to welcome the guest, the second is the cup of pleasure (finjan al-kayf) for relaxed enjoyment, and the third is the cup of the sword (finjan al-sayf), which historically symbolized shared tribal loyalty, protection, and alliance.
