Traditional summer drinks are a vital necessity to face the high heat in Iraq. Raisin juice (Sharbat Zbib) tops the list, followed by rose juice and cold Loomi Basra.
Black raisins, Damascus rose, Loomi Basra (dried lime), mint, and crushed ice.
Going out for a 'glass of Sharbat' is an evening ritual in the Iraqi summer. These drinks reflect the ability to create natural, refreshing solutions and are a symbol of hospitality in streets and markets.
Raisin and rose juice are available in all old city centers. In Baghdad, Al-Rashid Street and 'Haj Zbala' shop have been the top destinations since 1900.
Raisin juice is rich in iron and very refreshing. 'Loomi Basra' is boiled and cooled to become a sweet and sour drink that aids digestion. Old Sharbat shops are like small museums.
